Holiday Shopping Tips

It is already the end of November and Christmas is nearly here!  Are you ready for this big festive season?  I, myself is a bit prepared for I had done some shopping tasks in advance so I could avoid the holiday rush.

But before, I was a mall rat doing eleventh-hour shopping in already crowded malls.  It always did no good on me for I always ended up exhausted and sick on Christmas day.  So I always didn’t enjoy the actual day of Jesus’ birth just because of too much stress in shopping.

This year, I made a promise to myself not to redo such a bad habit anymore.  As for the moment of writing this, I am confident that this holiday season would be stress-free and more enjoyable to me.  It’s all because I had come up with some shopping ideas that I’m gonna share to you:

Shopping Tip # 1.  Do not procrastinate.

We, Filipinos are branded for having the “mayana” habit.  Whenever we were assigned to do a task, we always say, “Mamaya na”.  This attitude would never lead us to progress.  So, why delay?  Let’s do the things we ought to do NOW and let’s not wait for tomorrow to come.  Therefore, start preparing for Christmas TODAY!

Shopping Tip # 2.  Make a shopping list.

Photo from Web
Mostly, there are three types of shopping lists for Christmas.  One is the gift list wherein we list the names of our loved ones (family, friends, and inaanaks) with the corresponding gifts we have in mind for them.  In making this, consider the needs or wants of your recipients.  For what would be the purpose of your gift if it doesn’t interest him/her so it must be of good and practical use to your recipient.  The second is the grocery list wherein we list the recipes we’re going to cook for Noche Buena with its corresponding ingredients.  Of course we can’t buy the perishable items yet like meat for they spoil or rot in time.  Just start buying the preserved ones – fruit cocktail, all-purpose cream, condensed and evaporated milk, cheese, mayonnaise, and the like as early as now for their prices increase as soon as December comes.  The third is the “me” list wherein we list the clothes, shoes, accessories, and other stuff that we want for ourselves.  This list always comes last for me because I only buy things for myself whenever there’s an excess amount from my shopping budget.  And once I do, I shop in bazaars!:)

Shopping Tip # 3.  Shop during non-peak hours.

To avoid the shopping mob, sneak out from your daily tasks for a while to go to the mall.  You’ll have the mall all by yourself right after its opening time usually at 9AM.  It is not also crowded by 12 noon.  Just allot an hour or two during these periods and surely, you’re gonna finish shopping for that long list!

Shopping Tip # 4.  Window shop first before making any purchase.

In our economic crisis nowadays, it is always a must to be a wise spender.  So scout for the prices of the items first.  Based on experience, I usually buy an item instantly in a certain shop and when I go to the next shop, I regret for the very same item is cheaper there.  Just an advice, it won’t hurt to go around first before deciding where to buy the items in your list to save some of your money.

Shopping Tip # 5.  Look for SALE.

Most shops do clearance sale as early as September of each year.  After window shopping, wait for the 15th or 30th of each month foregoing September because shops open their sales on paydays.  Just be there early so the item that you’re eyeing for would still be available for you.

Shopping Tip # 6.  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.  Do not carry a lot of things with you.

When shopping, you have to be carefree in order for you to choose well.  Just be simple in your get-up and just bring a small shoulder bag because you only have two hands available for your purchased goods.  Avoid being conscious with what you’re wearing and avoid being overladen with shopping bags.

Shopping Tip # 7.  Be vigilant.

Christmas season is also the season of thieves so watch your personal belongings.  Pickpockets might just be lurking anywhere waiting for the chance to distract you in your busyness.  So you better be careful because the mall is not accountable if such incident would happen.

Shopping Tip # 8.  Reward yourself!

After doing all the shopping chores, treat yourself with ice cream or any of your favorite food.  It is always great to celebrate a job well done!  Don’t count the calories for it is a gift for yourself and to your tired feet.  Additionally, it would inspire you to look forward to another shopping spree again!

There I have my holiday shopping tips!  I hope this would be handy to you, my readers.  And for stress-free shopping, don’t forget to drop by at Fascino Boutique!  We’re located at Gomez St., Ozamiz City (beside Mom’s Sweet Delight and across Kinny’s Bakeshop).  We offer you a wide variety of selection!  We have dresses, bags, accessories, beauty products, and fragrances.  So avoid queuing in the counters of crowded malls!  Have a hassle-free and guilt-free (for our prices are low compared to the other shops in town) shopping only at Fascino Boutique!

Get Prettified: Start With Your Skin!

They say “Black is beautiful”.  But being born one, I never agree with that.  Since childhood, I long to be white for I always shed tears because of the other kids calling me names (see Home – 29 Years and Counting).

So, I sneaked into using my mother’s bleaching soap.  I rubbed it very forcefully on my skin that harmed it and made it even blacker.  Too silly of me!  I didn’t read the directions first before using it that was why, damage was done.  I had a phobia of using whitening products since then.

But in high school and college, I attempted to pursue my whitening career and started using papaya soaps and whitening lotions.  But nothing happened.  So I didn’t take it seriously and just adapted the pretense, “So what if I’m black?!”

Last year after seeing the effect of glutathione to my high school friend Cherry Ann, I got challenged.  I thought thrice so why not make a change for once in my life?  Timely, UNO came to Ozamiz so I registered.  Three months of taking UNO glutathione capsules had its effects already and I was so damn glad!
Afterwards, Ruth introduced another networking business which was Royale.  I shifted into it for its glutathione capsules have higher dosage than UNO’s and I was taking ‘em for one whole year!  After three months of stopping glutathione medication, my skin is still fairer than ever!  All I need to do now is to maintain it that’s why I asked the help of my friend, Marie Celle “MM” Mosqueda to give me tips on how to pamper my skin.

MM and I became friends through the organization Junior Chamber International (JCI).  Through Jaycee functions, she had introduced to me some skin care tips.  She’s afraid of taking synthetic capsules so she had created natural beauty regimens that are budget-friendly.  The following are as follows:

MM’s Skin Secret # 1 – Honey and Brown Sugar Scrub

Honey is rich in vitamins and minerals that are wonderful beauty aids that nourish the skin.  It is rich and thick, making it an effective moisturizer.  On the other hand, brown sugar is a coarse type of sugar that is colored with molasses and does not contain chemical preservatives that may irritate the skin.  It exfoliates the dead skin cells that paves the way for smoother and more supple skin.  Gently rub this concoction in your skin after bath, rinse only once, and off you get that renewed skin you’ll surely love!

MM’s Skin Secret # 2 – Milk Bath

Milk as we all know is very nutritious.  Even during the ancient times, Cleopatra had bathed in milk to make her skin soft to entice her lovers.  The fat and protein in milk hydrates the skin that prevents dryness.  In addition, the lactic acid also helps exfoliate the skin for additional softness.  So just simply pour some of the goodness of milk on your skin!

MM’s Skin Secret # 3 – Milk Salt Scrub

Milk salt is a ready-to-use product that you can conveniently buy in the grocery or any beauty shops.  It scrubs the dead layer of the skin away to give it a bright glow!  Just scrub this in dark areas like elbows and knees to have them evenly fair with the other parts of your body.  Moreover, scrubbing this on your gams can also reduce the build-up of cellulites.  All you’ve got to do is to be patient in scrubbing but just scrub only twice a week.  Just a warning, scrubbing too often will damage the skin cells so do not overdo it.

MM’s Skin Secret # 4 – Tea Leaves

Tea leaves have natural extracts that make the skin firm and prevents sagging.  It contains tannin which has anti-inflammatory effects that contracts body tissues.  Through that, tea leaves also reduce eye-bags.  Just boil some tea leaves, let it cool a bit, and pat on your skin.  Leave it for only 5 minutes and rinse.  After that, you can feel your skin tightened and refreshed!

With the aforementioned MM’s Skin Secrets, I can now maintain the fairness and firmness of my skin naturally.  Thanks to my beauty expert friend, MM who generously shared her treasured secrets to me.  In return, I am revealing to her my secret too.  It all comes from a bar of my very own Miss B Kojic Acid Soap (see My Fascino – Miss B Kojic Acid Soap).
Kojic Acid, Glutathione, and Placenta In One!

And to you my dear readers, try one or two of MM’s Skin Secrets after taking a richly moisturized bath of Miss B Kojic Acid Soap.  Get Fascinofied while being prettified for being pretty starts from having good and healthy skin!

Reminiscing Science Week

Science comes from the Latin word scientia meaning “knowledge”. It is an accumulated and systematized body of learning that explains, interprets, and understands our day to day experience in the natural world. Hep hep hep. Don’t leave this page yet. I won’t be lecturing about science now. I am just recalling a few of my lines every first day of school for my science classes.

When I was younger, I was never into science. I regarded those people who love science as nerds! Science never interested me and I was just obliged into studying it for my engineering course. And since I had majored in this area, all science subjects were given to me.

In my first year at Chinese School (MUHS), I found the students very eager and keen for science. Some were even more knowledgeable than I was especially in the field of astronomy. “The heck with outer space! Why study aliens that there are real people all around me?!” That was my opinion. But I didn’t have a choice so I just carried on with my science teaching career.

Despite the students’ “greater knowledge than I had” as I thought, there was still this longing in their hearts for laboratory activities. They wanted to experiment, test, see, and prove to themselves what were written on books and showed in the internet about science. Their eyes were hungry for something real and tangible. As they said, “To see is to believe.” And to ease some of that hunger, I made little efforts to let them experience science in my own little way.

To start with, I dropped sodium metal into water. It produced flame and the water became hot when the whole sodium dissolved. I dropped zinc metal into concentrated hydrochloric acid. It abruptly sizzled as it dissolved and fizz appeared with an evolution of gas. I put a drop of phenolphthalein in a beaker and I said that this clear liquid (sodium hydroxide) will turn pink as I transferred it to the beaker. And then it did happen!

All of the aforementioned acts were just so simple for me but for the kids, they were amazing and magical! Sodium is a very reactive metal that when exposed to moisture it reacts vigorously. Hydrochloric acid is very corrosive that any metal in contact with it would oxidize. And of course, phenolphthalein is an acid-base indicator that turns pink in basic medium. I then corrected them that there was no magic because in science, everything got its explanation.

Then the kids requested me to hold a Science Fair. I instantly said no and honestly told them that I didn’t know how to for I myself had never been to a Science Fair my whole life! They were disheartened but they could do nothing about it. So they just accepted it and I felt so sorry for them and to myself. I failed as a teacher.

The following year, the students were still insisting for a Science Fair. On the other hand, some teachers encouraged me to do it. They said that they will support me all the way. One was Ms. Aidalyn "Ate Aid's" Alcopra. She was the High School Department Coordinator. She told me that we can do it. She then suggested a Scientist-Look-Alike Contest. Mr. Quirino “Rene” Lonsagon, the High School English Teacher also promised that he will help for he loved science so much. His favorite subject was science and he was also more knowledgeable with some science activities than I did. Lastly, Yieldeza “Yeye” Ebale, the elementary science teacher got excited with the Science Fair idea too. She was a Social Studies major but teaching science interested her a lot that she was always enthusiastic to learn more about it.

In addition, Mrs. Jacelly Lim, the new Math, Science, and English Coordinator came into the scene. She was an experienced teacher from Oro Christian Grace School of Cagayan de Oro City who volunteered to help Chinese School. She said that having a Science Fair is such a big event for first-timers like me and Yeye. So she suggested that we’re gonna have a Science Week instead. She urged me to list some fun activities to conduct during science classes. After some planning with Yeye, Ma’am Jacelly approved the activities and added some tips on how to administer them.

Day 1 – Popular “Pop” Science Showcase
Venue – Pula-Puti (school’s lobby)

This day marked the beginning of the Science Week. Hannie Louise Lim opened the festivities by welcoming our guests who were some vacant teachers and grades 1 and 3 pupils. The third year students, who were the first presentors for the day showcased rubber egg, fireworks in glass, magic colored milk, etc. The kids enjoyed watching the show especially when Carmel Theresa Lim demonstrated her Putt Putt Boat. Everybody was astonished as the boat powered by a lighted candle sailed in the water. Her booth became the most crowded one thus she won first prize for the third year pop science category.

Day 2 – supposedly Film Viewing and Reaction Paper Writing but November 16, 2010 was declared as a National Muslim Holiday
Venue – supposedly at the Audio-Visual Room

Day 3 – Quiz Bee Elimination Round
Venue – Classrooms

Three Science Club officers for each class were assigned as quiz master, time keeper, and scorer. I just acted as an overseer for this activity. The most memorable and most hilarious quiz bee was with the second year students. Raphael Vincent Loreto just answered “Do Not Answer” for the meaning of DNA while Michael Uy translated parasite as “Sa layo pa matan-awan” (far-a-sight). We all had stomach-aching laughs! Thinking about it now paints a smile on my face. J

Day 4 – Poster-Making Contest
Venue – Classrooms and Pula-Puti

With the theme Exploring the World as Young Scientists, the students were grouped by three’s to draw or paint their interpretation of it. I was surprised by their interpretations for I hadn’t thought of them as I got the theme from the National Science Month Celebration of that year. They were all smart kids for they visualized something that I didn’t see. Their explanations of the theme through their posters were indeed a great hit that our Assistant Principal, Dr. Zhou Jing and Academic Head, Mr. Leon Wen appreciated them a lot!

Day 5 – Culmination Program
Venue – Gym

As a finale to the festivities, we had the Quiz Bee Championship, Kalikasan Sayawit (song and dance about nature) Contest, Scientist-Look-Alike Contest, and Awarding Ceremony. The highlights of the show were Kyle Christian Ong and company’s “wormology” answer for the study of worms during the Quiz Bee, the fourth year students’ all-outfitness for “Like a Scientist” (to the tune of Far East Movement’s Like A G6 composed by Al-Qader Lim) entry for Sayawit, and Anne Loveen Simbajon’s cute portrayal as Marie Curie.

Expectant Audience

Though we had plenty of flaws during the short program, it was good enough for us. It was our first time to hold a Science Week. Thanks to all teachers because everybody lent helping hands for both Yeye and I. Special thanks to Xianse Jennifer Salud for she supported us with the financial budget and in preparing the medals and certificates. Special thanks also to her sister, Xianse Brenda Salud for managing the sound and lighting system. Moreover, thanks to Nong Siano and Nang Angging for hauling tables, chairs, and white boards. They were such great floor managers!

Without our teamwork, Science Week would have not materialized. All activities were because of the kids, by the kids, and for the kids. It was a tremendous success for the whole school. And as for me as a faux science teacher, it was a great achievement! Nothing is impossible if you just have a willing heart. Thus, I became one of the nerds who learned to love science as my model students had. And this post is for them, my Besties in Science:

School Year 2009-2010
First Year – Hannah Joy Lim
Second Year – Carmel Theresa Lim
Third Year – John Matthew Lim
Fourth Year – Stefanie Chan

Fitness First

At the launch of Pinoy Biggest Loser, I thought to myself, “My God, they’re so fat. They can’t be thin.” All of the contestants were obese. It would be very hard for them to get rid off those extra fat deposits in their bodies.
But the camp began with its extraneous physical activities and strict diet. Then I remembered the summer before I turned third year high school when I was at the height of my chubbiness. As I’ve mentioned, I was so skinny and frail when I was still a kid because I was a picky eater. But when I was in high school, I developed this big appetite for any food being served.
Every summer, we went to Mommy Becky’s place for vacation at Lipa City, Batangas. Being a doctor without a child at that time, she could afford to give all of us, her nephews and nieces what we wanted. The number one thing she would always provide us was food. The refrigerator was always full and she regularly brought us to Jollibee, Mc Donald’s, Shakey’s, Pizza Hut, Goldilocks, Max’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, etc. (these fast food chains were not yet in Ozamiz during those years).
Day after day of that summer, I became fatter and fatter. All I did was ate and ate, making the most of the opportunity of having all the foods I liked. Until one day, I became dizzy and suddenly collapsed. Nobody was there with me but I came into my senses again and stood up. I didn’t pay any attention to what happened to me. The following day, I collapsed again. This time, I was on the floor for quite a while and I began to worry. So I told my aunt of what happened. She then took my blood pressure. She was surprised because it was too high. She immediately gave me a drug to lower it down. From then on, she controlled my food intake. One cup of rice each meal with a moderate amount of viand, no junk foods, no soft drinks, and no pork at all. She also told me to exercise a bit. So I did obey her because I was scared. Hypertension runs in our family’s blood.
When we went home, the diet and the exercise vanished. I went back to my old ways. Despite my negligence, the hypertension also vanished. Thank God! I was happy eating the foods I wanted then. But when I reached college, I started to feel insecure with my body. I couldn’t wear the clothes I wanted. We didn’t have a school uniform and we could freely wear whatever we pleased. The other girls were in fashionable clothes while I was on my T-shirt and worn-out jeans. Just luckily for me, I was in the College of Engineering so I had an excuse.
However, fourth year college came and we had to have our JS Prom. We had to be in our best guise for we only had one chance of having a Prom in the State University. Months before our Prom, me and my boardmates decided to trim down so we could wear sexy gowns. Thank goodness, I had company in my quest to be fit!
So we started out hiking. We would wake up at four o’clock in the morning and walk from our boarding house in Tibanga to Iligan’s city proper. It was quite a distance but we sacrificed. On contrary for me, I enjoyed it! I could see the houses’ and buildings’ structures up close, I could observe details of the road that I interpreted as art, and I could be able to meet some people.
Days of hiking were good but we were not contented so we decided to jog. According to statistics, we can burn more fats through jogging and we did it. Too bad for me, I always have short breaths so I had it as alternate – jogging, hiking, jogging, hiking….Moreover, we paired our exercise with diet. We just had oatmeal for breakfast, a cup of rice and a little viand for lunch, and another bowl of oatmeal for supper. We were very successful in our journey thus we had triumphed in wearing our revealing gowns for the Prom!

College JS Prom
After the Prom, I went back to my old ways again - more foods and no exercise. This time, I didn’t get chubby as I had. I didn’t know why but I guess it was because of the very tedious training at MSU-IIT.
After college, I became chubby again when I had my job in Cebu. My Mama Dita fed me a lot for I stayed in their house for seven months! She always cooked sumptuous meaty dishes and if I won’t eat, she would beat me. So, I was back to my baby-fat figure. Hehe…
By the time I came back home, I was introduced to an organization. It was Junior Chamber International (JCI). My first impression of the group was “always partying”! I belonged to the Ozamiz Red Rose chapter therefore, we had to always wear red – red gowns, red dresses, and red sexy blouses. How could I wear all of those if I’m fat? And with the advent of Facebook, I had to always look good in pictures. So, I had to be fit and fab, lean and sexy!
Then I went dieting. I cut in my food intake. I am very self-disciplined so I was successful with this one but I started a teaching career. My brain couldn’t function well without food. Then I ate again. I got to burn the calories with all the activities I was doing anyway.
After quitting Chinese School (MUHS), I had the luxury of time to cook again. I only had a few units at Medina College and the foods I ate were on my waist again. Luckily, I had my fitness buddies to help me!
They were my former co-teachers at MUHS. Yieldeza “Yeye” Ebale who’s living at San Antonio would wake up at 4 in the morning to fetch Charelle Joy “Cha” Macalisang in RS Tan Village, Maningcol. After that, they would meet with Cheryl “Che” Singuran at City Hall and they would hike/jog to fetch me in Malindang Lodge, Annex. Then together, we would hike/jog to Cotta Beach.
At Cotta, we would perform morning exercises that were taught to us by Lao Shi Jack Chen, former PE teacher at Chinese School. The exercises were as good as warm-up and stretching for the next activities that we were going to do.
Then we would have Tai Chi. T’ai Chi Ch’uan as its full term means “Supreme Ultimate Fist.” (www.wikipedia.org) It is a Chinese martial art that depicts slow, soft, and graceful movements. It is a moving form of yoga and meditation combined! Everytime we perform this, I could feel my body in rhythm with the sea breeze at Cotta. It’s so relaxing while imagining a tranquil world with the benefit of toning your muscles! You gotta try this one!
Some Tai Chi Steps
After Tai Chi, we would have Wushu. Wushu comes from two words wu meaning “martial” or “military” and shu meaning “discipline” or “skill” or “method”. (www.wikipedia.org) The whole word literally means “martial art”. Chinese martial arts are referred to as wushu or kung fu. On the other way around, wushu and kung fu are Chinese martial arts. No matter what the term is, they are just the same.
Wushu depicts fighting styles inspired by the natural movements of animals and birds. It was born in ancient China because of the need for self-defense, hunting techniques, and military training. Hand-to-hand combat practice was important in training Chinese soldiers in ancient times. Opposite to Tai Chi, its movements are quick and snappy. Wushu nowadays had become a sport that is one of the events of the annual Olympics.
Wushu Poses

After our exercises at Cotta, we would have puto maya (sweetened sticky rice) and sekwate (old-fashioned chocolate drink) for breakfast at Nang Kading’s. Her puto marks an Ozamiz trademark for it already exists before I was born. I can recall our song when I was in elementary "Puto ni Kading tag siwewen (50 centavos)..." at the tune of The Mighty Ducks' We Will Rock You.

In the afternoon, we would go swimming at Regina’s Swimming Pool for we believed that having ten swimming lapses at their not-so-Olympic-sized pool would burn a bar of Cloud 9. Quite the opposite, we would still eat, eat, and eat. Well at least we do some physical activities to burn what we’re eating.

etcetera, etcetera...
At home, my sister June Ann and I would do Zumba. It is the newest fad in the fitness world! It is a dance exercise that originates from Colombia. (www.wikipedia.org) It is so good that you don’t just exercise but you may also learn how to dance plus it makes your body graceful. All in all, you can do samba, salsa, chacha, etc. It is full of fun and lets you move to the beat of Latin music!
In closing, being fat or thin, chubby or lean does matter a lot. Like the Pinoy Biggest Loser aspirants, we have to do our best to be fit. Fitness is always a must so we have to make it first in our priority. Just take a walk once a day, jog in a while, swim at least once a month, and dance whenever you feel the urge. And if you have enough time, do take chances in learning Tai Chi and Wushu. You may join us every Saturday at 5 AM at Cotta Beach.:)
