Looking Back at EDSA People Power Revolution

"My memory of my first encounter with television is still clear until now.  I can still remember that I was playing outside my Tatay Toto’s house in Brgy. Triunfo.  There were plenty of adjacent houses in our neighborhood.  I saw people hurrying home to turn on their TV’s.  I was disturbed by the great commotion going on so I went from house to house to peep what was happening inside.

I could see in the eyes of the adults hope, at the same time fear, expectation, yearn, and excitement.  There was a great silence for a while and after a few minutes, there was a loud roar of jubilation.  Everybody was so happy and they were hugging each other.  Some even shed tears of joy.  Then my Tatay found me, wrapped me in his arms, and threw me in the air!  Philippines got its freedom again!  That was the end of the Marcos regime."

After 28 years of the EDSA People Power Revolution, let us all look back at the four-day peaceful revolution which restored democracy in the Philippines after 20 years of being ruled by a dictatorial regime.  We may not be there at the actual event but give five minutes of your time today to watch this vid courtesy of MYX.  With this, we can also take part in what our fellow countrymen had sacrificed to bring back freedom to our country.  Let us put meaning on the date today and not only treat it as just another national holiday.  So click on below!

Feature Friday: Honeybee Chick and Ribs Grill House

Feature Friday highlights businesses, people, fashion, and basically anything under the sun!

Boodle - a collection or lot of persons
Fight - to use weapons or physical force to try to hurt someone, to defeat an enemy, etc.
                                               - Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Boodle Fight - a festive sharing of a huge complete meal in only one big platter by a group                                             of persons using bare hands
                                              - yours truly

Boodle fight has its origin from the Philippine Military Academy.  It is their traditional way of eating freshly-cooked food on top of banana leaves on long tables using their bare hands.  It signifies brotherhood and camaraderie that implies what you eat is also what I eat.  With this, they combat in grabbing as much food as they can and as fast, too.  And since everybody in the army is always in a hurry, they eat boodle fight in standing position.

Of course, it's not that hygienic for some people to eat in a communal meal.  But with the Pinoy's unique personality, boodle fighting is not just practical and convenient for the military.  It also has become a fun way of eating together for everybody!  So during fiestas or picnics by the beach, boodle fight way of eating has claimed its name.  And today, native Filipino restos serve boodle fight.  Now thanks to Mr. Warren Tan (proprietor of Warren's Arts and Studio) for bringing boodle fight to the big OC!

Honeybee Chick and Ribs Grill House opened last January 29, 2014 at Gomez St., Ozamis City.  Like any other grill house, it serves grilled Filipino dishes like inihaw and barbeque.  But what they're famous for is the boodle fight!  Their boodle fight packages start from a very affordable price of P349 only for a group of 3-4 persons.  This already includes a handful of rice, pork barbeque, pork inihaw, steamed bangus, salted egg, cheesedog, and dried fish.  Plus, add-ons of softdridnks for each person is also on the house!  Their serving is very generous that the entire group would surely have its fill!

Aside from the boodle fight, Honeybee also serves roasted chicken with real honey at the least price of P130 when compared with the lechon manok price range in the city.  And for every purchase of these Honeybee roasters, a Coke in can is given as a freebie!  Isn't that sulit enough?

I am so glad to have had my first ever boodle fight experience last Saturday for Ate Aida's birthday!  Number 1 rule that we had, no diet for the evening!  How could you if what is laid in front of you is a whole caboodle of mouth-watering Pinoy favorites?!!!  So we gave in and indulged and even requested for an extra cup of rice.  Their pork inihaw is just so good that I also have to try their back ribs which is their specialty for my next visit.

So for a fun family and barkada experience, try boodle fighting at Honeybee!  I guarantee you, it's something new and totally different!  Just as what Sir Warren quipped when asked why boodle fight, "just for a change.....", it is indeed unique in its way!

And now, my definition for boodle fight would be.....

Boodle Fight - eating at your heart's content with the one's you love to strengthen the bonding moment! (with exclamation point for emphasis)

Thank you Sir Warren for sitting with us despite the busy floor that you had during this time!
Thanks also to the very kind staff of Honeybee!

When I Was Pharmaseeing

Yes, I am not a pharmacist but I got to experience the pharmacy world when I taught all chemistry subjects for pharmacy students at Medina College.  So, throwback Thursday na naman ito!  It's all because, when I stepped out from La Salle early this morning after my first period class, there were my previous pharmacy students passing by in their motorcade for the opening of their Pharmacy Week.  And I got teary-eyed when I waved and smiled at them!  They just fussed over me whenever they see me!  So here goes my tribute to them because I also miss them so much like I do with my Chinese school kids.  I will now bombard you with our fun photos as I was pharmaseeing with them!
Pharmacy Week 2012 - Field Trip, Feeding, and Pharma Night
World Teachers' Day 2012 and Intramurals 2011 and 2012
Labbing Weekends
Valentines Fair, Candyland Party, and White Coat Ceremony
Duty at Medina Hospital
I sincerely did enjoy my stay at Medina College!  Though there were students who were so pasaway, I also had students who fought victoriously 'till the end!  So let me have this opportunity to once again congratulate our newest registered pharmacists, Richel Lape, McPwill Chavez, Stephanie Laurete, and Severino Haganos!  Truly, you are my pride and joy as my first batch of pharmacy students because your success is also my success!

When Teaching Was So Hard Yet Super Fun For Me!

As I am going through my Facebook timeline now, I am surprised that we can actually re-view our past posts through the year archive by the side bar.  Then I feel nostalgic with the life I had while teaching my high school rascals way back in MUHS.  Here are some statuses that I had shouted out loud when I found teaching very hard yet full of fun!

*I have to preserve the original lines so pardon me for using the vernacular.  I also have to change the names of my students into celebrity names so to protect their identities.*

My unforgettable classroom scenarios:

My funny experience of the day:  Serious ko naghatag ug quiz sa Bio.  Si Daniel kay mikalit lang ug tindog dayon mi tan-aw sa papel ni Enrique....Lesson of the day:  Kung mangopya gani, dili magpa-obvious!  Understand?!!!

Student:  "Do Not Answer"

Quiz Bee at school

Quiz Master:  "Which of the following is a parasite?  a.  ringworm   b.  dog   c.  ...."
Student cuts in:  "Ma'am, unsa diay nang parasite?  Kanang sa layo pa matan-awan?"
Miss Mae:  LOL!

December 26, 2010

Miss Mae:  Parents only want the best for their kids.
Student:  How did you know, Ma'am?  You're not yet a parent.
Miss Mae:  (speechless!)
Realization:  Aw o no?  Da!  Advise2x pa!  Mura mag korek!

It was really a lot of fun having bloopers in the classroom that everyday, I always had stories to tell over dinner at home.  Then my whole family would also laugh with the comical stints my students have for the day.

However, since they were still kids, they were also full of childish pranks which inevitably hurt me.  Due to my immaturity at that time, I had also posted some trash talks that I haven't deleted nga pala:

I super regret the day I decided to become a teacher....BULLSHIT!!!

Tomorrow will be my last teachers' day.....

In any way, if my kids were the ones who quarreled me, they were also the ones who comforted me.  These are only snippets of their gesture that they also care for me:

And with the laughter and tears, I had grown up with them too.  I had learned to love teaching the hardest way, much more I had learned to love the unlovables!  Eventually, I started to care.  Then the unlovables became my loves.

Congratulations, mga anak!  You've made our science week a very memorable event! :-)  Miss Mae is very proud of you! xoxo

Mga anak Coco, Piolo, John Lloyd, Vhong, Billy, Luke, please paghinay-hinay mo sa pag-bike, pag-motor, ug pag-drive sa inyo sakyanan.  Pray for God's protection always.

But with so much fun I had, I decided to stop.  I'm through with "catching up" my high school years ('coz I missed so many things to experience during my real high school years) and it was about time to move forward.  Additionally, I was also getting older that I could not jive in with the younger generation anymore.  So I decided to go.  Then I got separation anxiety when we parted ways.  It was like breaking up with a boyfriend (though I haven't experienced this yet).

March 17, 2011

What's on my mind while fixing Rayver's calculator this morning:  "Ang uban kahang teacher, mag-ing ani pud?  Hahay, mao na niy gitawag nga na-over sa pagpangga!"  Naa na unta koy anak nga tinuod para naa napud koy panggaon kung wala namo. :-(

March 18, 2011

As promised to Julia, di ko mag saba2x dre sa FB.  But I want to let all of you know, galagot ko ninyo kay inyo ko gipahilak!  Magkita pa raba ta ugma!  Btaw, joke lang.... I just want you to know that I <3 You All So Much, my premature 1st years, my baby 2nd years, my darling 3rd years, and my forever junior griffins 4th years!!!!! mwahugz!

April 15, 2011

Hahay.  I super miss all my students/anaks.....

Today, I don't find teaching so hard with the quality of students I have.  But I don't have fun at all! From time to time, my previous kids are still on my mind because my college students now are far too different from them.  College life is all so serious business and even more serious with the tough subject that I'm handling right now.  Their main concern is just to seriously strive hard to pass Physics!  I feel like, I couldn't connect to them.  If I crack a joke, it seems like they just can't get that I'm already joking.  At the same time, they just couldn't crack jokes on me (way back then, my kids and I throw insults to each other too!).  In short, we are just plainly professional with the teacher-student type of relationship.  Sad to say, I have never become friends with them.

Hay, ang buhay nga naman!  'Pag andyan, ayaw mo.  'Pag wla, hinahanap-hanap mo!  Maybe I just miss having fun in the classroom for I don't have pasalubong stories to my family anymore.  My teaching experience now has been dry and dull.  Or maybe, I don't want to be attached to my students like before so to protect myself from separation anxiety.

But all in, I still thank God for my funny high school kids experience!  In my eyes, they will forever be my high school anaks though they will become professionals and married individuals someday!  They will always be my pasaway little kiddos who once were my playmates and sometimes toys!  I am just so glad that we still have connections until now (though oftentimes, they tend to forget me na)! :)

Hahay.....Hapit na mahuman ang teachers' day pero wa juy maski isa ka anak mi greet sa ako....Ing-ana diay nah?  Kung walay klase, walay mo greet?

Thank you so much, Kathryn, Coco, JC, and Jericho for celebrating my 30th birthmonth with me!!! :)

Overdrive

I am never an automobile person and I'm the least to go to an auto show!  But when teacher Cheryl won over the idea of strolling a bit at City Hall Drive last night, I didn't hesitate.  So to further celebrate Ate Aida's birthday after boodle fighting at Honeybee (watch out for my Feature Friday post this week), we went to Ozamis City's first ever auto show!

Overdrive is produced by Team Illusion and The Hit Factory in cooperation with the local government of Ozamis, San Miguel Beer, Kia Motors, Smart, and Repsol Motor Oil.  It is a show of the illest rides and bad bikes wherein I found everything new to my sight.

I was pretty amazed by the uniqueness of each piece from the very huge trucks (which I thought I need a ladder to get into) to the cutest bikes (which I thought I could never ride on).  It was actually an opportunity to see in real-life what we're seeing on television and prove that such things do really exist.  So for this, pa-picture lang ang peg!

Since it is a citywide event, babes and hotties were also invited with overflowing booze and outdoor dance party.  It was indeed the night for big boys and their toys with music by FHM Model DJ Cherry Summer.  Nonetheless, DJ Alfred Maligaya also rocked the event!  At the end, I didn't regret for coming to the show.  For at first I thought it was only a "show-off", but it wasn't and it wasn't bad enough an auto show as Ozamis' first!  So congratulations to the organizers!

But as for me, I never have a dream car!  For I am much contented with my feet taking me from home to school to store, vice versa everyday! :p

Vday Eat-All-You-Can Places in the Big OC

Photo from Web
Rarely we can find eat-all-you-can places here in Ozamis City.  But on Valentines Day, almost all of the restos here open up their bountiful buffet for all-you-can-eat to the public!  My recommended places are:

Bethany Gardens Hotel and Restaurant
Asian Hotel

Aside from their buffet, they also transform into a romantic haven with dim lights, candle lights, hearts, roses, and sweet music.  So get your reservations now for a lovey-dovey night with your special someone!

These eat-all-you-can places are not exclusive for lovers only.  The whole family including kids or groups of friends can also enjoy an evening of big meals for the day of hearts!

Monday Matters: How to Have a Date with Yourself on Valentines Day

Monday Matters is dedicated to all things that matter.

Four days to go and it's gonna be Vday!  Contrary to what I had posted last year on the places to go and what to do for Valentines day for couples, now I'm gonna share to you some what to do's for celebrating a single Vday for one!  I guess I can have a big say on this because I had now become a master of the words solo, lone, individual, and phrases me-myself-and-I and me-and-my-shadow!  Being single since forever, I have been wandering around by myself.  I have known a lot of strolling malls alone, eating at restos individually, watching flicks in solitary, etc.  So here are some of the things to squeeze in for the day of hearts the single-hearted way:

Have a Facial Treatment

Taking care of our skin is always a must and having reliable products at home is not that adequate anymore for let's say, ladies at my age.  Let's just admit it, we are no longer in our youth and our body's biology and chemistry change as we age.  That's why we need to go to the derma from time to time to help us with maintaining the balance of our skin's needs.  Yeah, it is time consuming to have facial treatments but putting a little effort to preserve your youthful glow would surely do the tricks!

Get a Foot Spa and Pedicure

Our feet are the most abused body parts.  Imagine that, we are stepping on 'em and they carry the total of our body weight!  So this pair needs to be rewarded at times.  Have it pampered by getting a foot spa wherein the callouses would be scrubbed off to make way for new skin cells to surface.  Additionally, it will be massaged and moisturized to ease all the burden it has been carrying for so long.  Hehe.....Then have your nails done to make your feet pleasing to the eyes.  Remember, having a pair of healthy feet can take us to places so have it relaxed sometimes.

Have Your Hair Treated

Our hair is our crowning glory.  It plays a crucial part to our image.  If we have frizzy and dry hair, this tells that we don't care about the way we look.  And this implies that we don't care about anything else at all.  So we have to have our hair neat, tidy, and shiny.  No matter what hairstyle do you have or may your hair be straight or curly, the important thing is, it must be healthy.  If we have healthy hair, people will see that we are responsible enough to be entrusted with anything else.

Chill in a Coffee Shop

You can just do anything in a coffee shop!  You can read a good book that you've been wanting to read but didn't have the time to.  You can write an article or a poem or any other composition.  You can do online shopping which is of great help nowadays.  Or you can just simply enjoy watching people and create funny stories in your head for each one.  Linger in a coffee shop as long as you want.  People won't just care anyway!

So those are just simple ways to enjoy yourself on Valentines Day!  Then you will just realize that the day had already ended and conclude to yourself that it's just another normal day.  Treating oneself once in a while can't be that luxurious and a waste of money but think of it as a reward to yourself for working very hard.  Moreover, having lonesome dates won't be that lonesome at all if you are enjoying the things that you do without the fuss of having an annoying companion!

For foot spa and pedicure, visit Quality Skin Care and Spa (which I will be featuring soon).
For hair treatment, visit Carlo Reyes Hair Salon (which I will be featuring soon also).
For coffee and solitary atmosphere, visit Cafe Eduardo.
For Valentine Sweet Nothings, visit Fascino.

Feature Friday: Hula Hut

Feature Friday highlights businesses, people, fashion, and basically anything under the sun!

February spells L-O-V-E!  It is the month for cupid, the month for lovers, and the month to just simply fall in love!  It is a month of too much mushiness and cheesiness, one might add mawkishness to the love vocabulary.  All so corny, right?  But if you want to be a little bit more romantic this Valentine's Day, bring your special someone to the Hula Hut!

Hula Hut is located at the ground floor Gaizano Southwing, Port Road, Ozamis City.  This city's new resto is Hawaiian-inspired as the name itself suggests.  With that, their ambiance and menu have every bit of Hawaiianish touch.  The resto depicts the romantic atmosphere of the tropical Hawaii which is farmost, the world's #1 honeymoon destination!

Since we're talking about being romantic here, a live band is at play to set the mood!  Aside from Hawaiian music, the band also plays hits from the 60's, 70's, and 80's ideal for couples who love the classics!  Middle-aged couples can really relate and enjoy the songs from the past.  They can also dance to the groove with the beat of the Beatles and Frank Sinatra.  But guys out there who are my age can also relate because there are already versions of the classic hits that are being sang by our artists nowadays.  I bet you, you will just be surprised once a certain song is being played that it actually is an old song.  It doesn't hurt much if we'll put a little effort in getting to experience the past.  So come and enjoy the music that mom and dad also enjoyed in their teenage years!
You Can Also Hit the Mic and Sing Your Fave Classic Hit!
And for the single-hearted this Valentine's Day, don't ya worry!  Tag along a friend or your whole gang of also single friends!  For sure, you will have a memorable Valentine night with good food, good music, and a good laugh!  For Valentine is a celebration of love and love is not only exclusive for those who are in romantic relationships!

With Bestie MM
To cap the night off, drinks like cocktails, wines, and beers are also available at Hula Hut.  Visit them every Friday and Saturday nights for their live band!

Hula Hut reminds everyone to drink moderately.
