How to Extinguish Fire the Right Way

It's often funny how at times you become ignorant of a thing you should be master of.  Just like me, I'm majoring in chemistry for 16 years now (including college) and had worked in industrial plants yet I never touched a single fire extinguisher until last week when LSU Science Department conducted their annual orientation on how to use the fire extinguisher for laboratory safety.

Spearheaded by science coordinator, Mrs. Maria Cristina M. Llauder, the activity started with a prayer (led by yours truly) and without further ado the demonstration followed.

There are only four magic words to be remembered by heart in using the fire extinguisher with the acronym PASS.

P for Pull

Pull the safety pin located at the top of the fire extinguisher.

A for Aim

Aim the nozzle of the fire extinguisher at the base of fire and not at the flames.

S for Squeeze

Squeeze the handle of the fire extinguisher to discharge the dry chemical inside which is the extinguishing agent.

S for Sweep

Sweep the hose of the equipment from side to side until the fire is extinguished.

That's how easy it is to use a fire extinguisher so thanks to La Salle University for this another opportunity of learning.  Hopefully, our students will not panic in case of emergency (God forbid) and use their common sense for our laboratory classes' safety.

Then again, school activities like this make me smile for if I didn't become a teacher, I could not've touched a fire extinguisher nor learn how to use it all my life!  (despite of being a chemical engineer.  hehe.....)

Night Safari

Circa '99's baby love turns one today!  Just like our other batchmates' children, I am glad to be part of this little darling's milestones from christening to birthday/s.  It seems like it was only yesterday that I touched Charmagne's womb just before she gives birth to Baby Mathea and now, Mathea's already one.  It's just so amazing how time flies soooo fast again!

Mathea's advanced birthday party was held last night at Mayflower Glass Garden.  It has a safari-inspired theme with me camouflaging in zebra print.  Thanks to Ruth for my outfit of the night!  I finally squeezed into this one after the diet and the work-out to loose the pounds I gained last summer.

As we were about to eat, a surprise suddenly popped out from the door!  The batchmate I haven't seen since college unexpectedly showed up.  Ronie Mae came all the way fresh from Hong Kong!

It was great catching up with Amy after a very long time!  Her baby was such a darling, too.  Baby Shanica's all smiles to all of us!  Though time was brief, the night was well-spent.  Thanks to Alex and Meg for celebrating their unica hija's 1st birthday with us! :)

And thanks to my sissy, June Ann for accompanying me since Quennie, Kristine Mae, and the rest of the circa didn't make it to the party!

When mommies are friends, babies become automatically friends!  So to the baby who always garners the most likes in Facebook, happy happy birthday!  May you be healthy always, Baby Mathea and grow up as an obedient girl for Dad and Mom to be happy.  Stay pretty, darling! :)

Feature Friday: Rodeo Drive Surplus Warehouse

Feature Friday highlights businesses, people, fashion, and basically anything under the sun!

Since I'm a go-getter of fab finds at very low prices, I'm into garage sales, flea markets, and bazaars.  I always love the idea of being streetwise, getting more for less.  I'm still the person who doesn't splurge on clothes, shoes, and bags of high-end brands even if they're already on sale.  But if I find such "brands" on some of my friends' preloved posts, I consider getting one as long as the price is still reasonable (and negotiable).  Much more if it is from a bazaar where prices are at their lowest, I'll definitely go gaga!

Bazaars in Ozamiz are already sprouting like mushrooms.  Ukay-ukay just seems to be everywhere especially this week's celebration of the city's fiesta.  The more ukay-ukay available around, the more I couldn't find something fabulous.  I don't know, but I just see it as too mainstream that I couldn't get something unique at all.  Everything are just the same in my eyes.

But by happy chance, there's this new bazaar in town that offers a whole new ukay-ukay experience!  It is located at the old FJK building at Animas Cor. Washington Sts., Brgy. Aguada, the Rodeo Drive Surplus Warehouse!

Photo Grabbed from Rodeo Drive
Rodeo Drive has an assortment of apparels from tops to bottoms from a myriad of brands.  Name it and you'll have it as long as you keep your eyes open.  It's hassle-free shopping in here for you don't have to dig up as what my Tagalog cuzzy always say about ukay-ukay that it's hukay-hukay.  The clothes are conveniently displayed in hangers and well-organized.  Blouses and dresses for women in one area, sweater, caps, and cargo pants for men in another area, and cute jumpers and overalls for children in another.  Aside from clothes, Rodeo Drive also has bags, curtains, bedsheets, and carpets.  The warehouse is also a wholesaler of kids' toys, just in time for Christmas which is already a few months from now!

As a frequent by-passer of Animas St. in my daily home-school-store routes, I've been wanting to drop by Rodeo Drive for days already but I couldn't shop without the "accomplice".  Gladly, Quennie, Ann Lorein, and Christine Mae decided to check the place last Wednesday while waiting for VM for our Circa '99 mission.  So it's time to do the blog!  Excuse me for my uniform, I was fresh from school then and this shopping spree was unplanned.  Luckily, it was the 15th though!  Hehe.....

Having these three with me made my afternoon getaway super fun!  I didn't know that Quennie and Ann Lorein are masters of ukay-ukay who could easily spot the famous brands.  I'm not really particular with brands so perhaps that's the reason why I was kulelat during the search.  But once they see something good, they give to me.  And that made me think to have them as my ukay-ukay buddies.  Plus the jolly chitchat of Christine Mae and the whole shebang, an ukay-ukay shopping was indeed a blast!

Bazaars are great so let's all welcome a new one!  With Rodeo Drive, ukay-ukay in Ozamiz had gone high-end but prices are the same with what's already around.

Now if you are up for fabulous finds at the lowest prices, visit Rodeo Drive Surplus Warehouse!  Store hours are from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.  They have new bundles every first week of the month, 20% off on all clothing items by the 2nd week, 50% off by the 3rd, and as big as 70% discount by the 4th!  Also like their FB fanpage here for updates!

Thanks to Sir Mark Tan for the Opportunity! :)

Pork with Young Corn and Pineapple Slices

Mmmm.....  Looks yum yum, right?  What could this be?  Well, this is just one of my kitchen experiments without the recipe.  I just cooked this through instinct.  Hehe....  So, allow me to share this very simple dish to you that could be prepared in as fast as 15-20 minutes.  Here's how:

Marinate pork slices in pineapple juice, garlic, onion, salt, and pepper.

Bring to a boil and add tomato ketchup.

Simmer until meat is tender.

Add young corn and continue to simmer.

Top with pineapple slices.

See?  That's how quick and easy it is!  This spur-of-the-moment imbento recipe is even made yummier with Del Monte Pineapple Slices.  FYI, it's not only delicious to add pineapple to your dish but it's also nutritious.  So give your dish some Hawaiian touch!  With Del Monte Kitchenomics, life in the kitchen is made simpler, stress-free, and healthier!

A Sunday Aftie Fair

Another friend's child turns a year older today and I'm greatly honored to have had celebrated with this little cutie from christening to birthdays!  Time just flies so fast and Baby Anderson turns two today! :)

It was a joint birthday celebration with his cousin, Nathaniel and the party was carnival-inspired at Bluewaves Resort!  Vibrant colors, fun games, tons of prizes, and jolly nursery rhymes at the background - kids were truly delighted with the fair!

Aside from them, Atsi Ann and I also enjoyed the party soooo much that we felt like kids again!  Popcorn, cotton candy, hotdog, and ice cream - it's been a while not having these goodies!

The party was fun, fun, fun and bumping into people that I also haven't seen in a while made it even more fun!  (I just hadn't taken photos with all of 'em)

Thank you, Oliver and Arbie for the invites!  God bless you and your whole family.  Many more birthdays to come for Baby Anderson! :)

Burger Land Juice and Dessert

Bored of the usual burger and fries from the usual fastfood chains? Up for something Israeli? There's this food stall I just recently discovered in our city that serves something new to the taste buds. It's Burger Land Juice and Dessert inside Ozamiz' leading department store, Unitop.  Me and my storekeeper, Jing2x happened to check-in the place the other week for a quick merienda after closing Fascino.

Burger Land's serving of shawarma is bigger than the other shawarmas served around. It is an international-size serving that will do as a complete meal for dinner. The meat is so tender with fresh veggies and tangy sauce. It really has authentic Mediterranean spices with that different kick to the bite! However, the flat bread is a bit thicker which makes its insides soft and not crispy.

After one shawarma down, we promised to try their burger some other time for we were already so full with the shawarma alone.  So once inside Unitop, grab a bite at Burger Land Juice and Dessert#tosomeats

What's the Catch at Big Catch

The moment of writing this, I'm actually standing up at 12:16 AM (onwards) for I'm still so full from the pig-out dinner me and my friends had for Ruth's birthday at Big Catch!  Like, ah!  What a cheat Saturday night dinner that was!  I'm still on a diet from summer vacation's indulgence but I'd die if I won't taste all of the Big Catch bounty!

For starters, they have homey soup and tasty appetizers.

Seafood Chowder
Kinilaw, Baked Mussels, Fish in Beer Batter, and Calamari
For the main course and stars of the catch, they have crabs, prawns, mussels, and shrimps in 3 different sauces of your choice namely Garlic Butter, Hot Garlic Sauce, and Big Catch Special Sauce.  The great thing here is, you can also vary the intensity of the hotness of the sauce from non-spicy, mild, to spicy but I'd prefer it to be super dooper spicy (you may whisper to the waiter and request for this one too, hehe.....). Garlic Butter is really oily as it is "butter", Hot Garlic Sauce is sweet, sour, and spicy but not too garlicky as the Garlic Butter, and Big Catch Special Sauce has curry and hints of paprika and oregano (as far as my taste buds could decipher and if I'm not mistaken) that I love the most!

And if you're checking-in the place for merienda, they also have light pasta snacks that are also seafood-based.

Spaghetti Marinara
Spaghetti Pasta in Olive Oil and Shrimps
As a pasta lover, I love both and could eat 'em both in one setting when gluttony strikes!

But they don't have any dessert in their menu so we just brought our cake for the birthday girl.  It's corkage-free (by the way) and they're also generous to lend you a knife, small plates, and forks for the sweets.

Making a Wish and Blowing the Candle for Baby Ruthie
Camera Phone Can't Capture the Whole Table Laden with the Catch
With Circa '99's Adopted Batchmate, Aido
From a distance with love:  Thank you so much, Ruth for the generosity and friendship for over 18 years!  Oh, God!  We're really getting older!  Stay pretty, sexy, and happy!  More blessings to come and love love love, chog! :)

And just like Cebu's Bucket Shrimps, dining at Big Catch is cowboy-style where you can just be yourself eating with your bare hands.  They also serve unlimited rice that's way too much for the temptation of eating more than your tummy can accommodate.  Hehe.....

With JCI-Ozamiz Red Rose Tita's the Other Friday Night
So there's no need to travel far and long to Cebu or CDO for Redtail Shrimps and More anymore (Rhyme or redundancy? English grammar please....) for we already have the catch here in the big OZ!  Congratulations and thank you to the Tang family for bringing in another fun dining experience to our city! :)

With Chef Niῆo "Jong" Tang
Enjoy catching up at Big Catch Restaurant!  They're located at Timesquare along Juan Luna Cor. J. Sanciangco Jr. Sts., Brgy. Aguada, Ozamiz City.

With Future Miss Ozamiz, Sofia Maglasang and Pamangkin
Thanks also to the Big Catch staff for being so patient in taking our photos for we won't eat 'till we have 100 photos in our phone's gallery.  Haha!

Also visit Big J Grill House along Maningcol Highway, Ozamiz City! :) And it's time to sleep now!  More of #tosomeats in my future posts.  Thank you for logging-in The Other Side of Mae! :)
