Catching Up with the Roses

It has been quite sometime now that I haven't showed myself to the whole JCI-Ozamiz Red Rose community!  But as what my students always say, "Past is past, let's not discuss", let's not discuss heartaches here!  I am just glad that I did saw them last night for Atsi Ann's birthday bash!

To my "mother" president, thank you so much for making my baby Jaycee year a very memorable one!  Thank you, Atsi Ann for your kind heart and never-ending understanding.  Thank you for the love and care as a real Atsi to me!  You are the older sister I never have.  I love you, Atsi! :)

After the dinner party at New Central Restaurant, onto my favorite couch in the city!

And there we had more talk, more fun, and more laughs!  Oh, I had missed this kind of super bonding moment with these beautiful red roses!  'Till our next meeting, ladies! :)

Start-of-the-Semester Blues

Overloaded with subjects, plenty of students, tons of preparations!  I am super jaded since yesterday!  But I thank God for work.  I love work!  It makes me busy and active.  However, I still suffer these sort of start-of-the-semester blues.  These make me think to quit teaching.  What is this for?  I never dreamed of becoming a teacher, anyway!  As I always say. :(  Why am I still holding on to this?  Why do I keep pursuing this thing that I hate, love, hate, love, hate the most?  Oh, how will this confusion end?!!!

Commemorating Super Typhoon Yolanda

It will be one year tomorrow when super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) hit the Philippines.  It was a very tragic catastrophe to our country but this just again proved that Filipinos can withstand hardships of any kind.  Through this, the Filipino bayanihan spirit had prevailed and reigned.  All people, young and old acted voluntarily to aid the typhoon survivors.  Various projects were formed by different organizations and institutions.  Among the many are Junior Chamber International Philippines (JCIP) 's Oplan Damayan, La Salle University-Ozamiz' Halad:  A Concert for a Cause, and Ozamiz' small group of young professionals and businessmen's #TabangGikanSaMindanao.  With this, even from a little child's one peso, a tricycle driver's one kilo of rice, to a big businessman's thousands of pesos, all donations were directly given to those who were greatly affected by the typhoon.  There was no help big or small.  Every single help were counted to ebb away the pain and infliction Yolanda brought to our country.  Read the poem below written by a Yolanda survivor that describes how the super typhoon came to claim lives.

The Haiyan Dead
by Merlie Alunan

Do not sleep.
They walk our streets
climb stairs of roofless houses
latchless windows blown-off doors
they are looking for the bed by the window
cocks crowing at dawn lizards in the eaves
they are looking for the men
who loved them at night the women
who made them crawl like puppies
to their breasts babes they held in arms
the boy who climbed trees the Haiyan dead
are looking in the rubble for the child
they once were the youth they once were
the bride with flowers in her hair
red-lipped perfumed women
white-haired father gap-toothed crone
selling peanuts by the church door
the drunk by a street lamp waiting
for his house to come by the girl dreaming
under the moon the Haiyan dead are
looking for the moon washed out
in a tumult of water that melted their bodies
they are looking for their bodies that once
moved to the dance to play
to the rhythms of love moved
in the simple ways--before wind
lifted sea and smashed it on the land--
of breath talk words shaping
in their throats lips tongues
the Haiyan dead are looking
for a song they used to love a poem
a prayer they had raised that sea had
swallowed before it could be said
the Haiyan dead are looking for
the eyes of God suddenly blinded
in the sudden murk white wind seething
water salt sand black silt--and that is why
the Haiyan dead will walk among us
endlessly sleepless--

Indeed, Yolanda came like a theft in the night.  It was the Unwanted Visitor.  Through prayer and intercession, we can ask God to ease the pain and trauma of the Yolanda survivors.  A year or two or another year.  They still need us.  We might've given them their physical needs but they still have their emotional needs which must be given attention.  Since we cannot be there for them physically, at least we still have them in our prayers.

To Joan Te Roa, The Bubbly Girl with the Biggest Heart

It's been five days since we heard of the sad news and I never found the strength to write about her.  Today, we lay a very good friend, Joan F. Te Roa to her eternal rest and it is only today that I had accepted her passing away.  Indeed, she left.  She left at a very early age of 27.  I still couldn't believe she's gone.  She was still here last week.  I even saw her, around this very same hour inside a tricycle across the street.  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to wave at her nor smile at her because I was inside my friend's car.  I saw her and she didn't even saw me.  I never thought that was my last glimpse of her.

Joan was still a little girl when I first knew her.  Her mom, Mrs. Salve Fernandez-Te Roa who was my grade school English teacher always brought her to our classroom.  At first, I didn't like her because she was so maldita  to us.  Hehehe.....  She roamed around the classroom, finding fault with any one of us and quarreling us.  But we couldn't fight back because she was our teacher's daughter.  I even make sumbong to my mom about her but she just told me to just give way because she's younger than me and that she's just like my little sister.  So I just didn't mind her "being maldita" towards us not until she became my sister April's classmate.

Surprisingly, they became friends with my sister.  Then I realized that the attitude she was previously showing to me and my classmates was just mere paglalambing of a little girl whose older brother is way too older to become her playmate.  She just wanted to make friends but we misinterpreted it.  But with my sister and their other classmates, they clicked and the real attitude of Joan was becoming to show.

I saw her growing up together with my sister.  They also went to high school and college together.  I admit, I may not know her that well as the others do but I saw her as a very loving person.  And I had proven that to myself when she enrolled her big nephew to MUHS way back 2010.  Frequent bumping-intos with her in department stores or the streets allowed me to discover what a very responsible person she was.  She was running errands for her mom, her older brother, her organization, her pamangkins, etc.  I thought to myself, Joan was so selfless.  She helped, she cared, she always thought of others before herself.

Surely, Joan will be missed.  She will be missed by her friends, neighbors, pupils, parents of her pupils, colleagues, and family.  She is an exceptional person and maybe the reason why God took her first.  Her mission in this world had been completed.

Jo, earlier today the rain poured so hard when The Lord's Prayer was sung.  I knew and I felt it was you.  You didn't want to leave yet but Jo, go.  Take God's hand, Jo.  You are now in God's loving embrace.  Rest in His arms, Jo.  Don't worry about your daddy and mommy.  Your kuya, ate, and pamangkins are there for them.  Many people love you, Jo and these people will also be the ones to look after your family for you.  Rest in peace, my dear good friend.  Claim your place in heaven! :)

5 5 5

5 is for quintessence.  5 is the number of Islam.  5 is greater than four.  And 5 is the number of the day because today is November 5 bringing in high 5 of good tides!  First and foremost, today marks the launching of my ever favorite blogger, Patty Laurel's newly-dressed website.  So if you want to get good vibes for happy lives, do waste your time with her at www.pattylaurel.com.  To my idol Patty, more power!  You're always an inspiration to many.  I'm looking forward to read and see more of your adventures with your hubby, Patrick Filart! :)

Second, today is 50 days to Christmas!  Yepey!!!  It's now start of the season to be jolly!!!  So with this, I am also launching a new project for the little community me and my family are supporting at Brgy. Bongbong, Ozamiz City.  In cooperation with Fascino Body Essentials, we are naming this project Singko Mo, E-Regalo Mo wherein for every dozen of balloons ordered at Fascino Store, you will be able to donate 5 pesos to the said community.  Proceeds of this fund-raising project will be used to let the children of this community experience a happier Christmas.  We envision to give them a Christmas party with lots of food, games, and gifts!  Wouldn't it be great to share a little monetarily and give big joy heartily?  But let me have this clear with you.  Prices of our balloons remain the same.  There are no add-ons for we will only be getting a portion of it for kids' joy!

So let's start the ball rolling!  Starting today up to December 25, we're gonna have 50 days of Christmas through Singko Mo, E-Regalo Mo!  Your 5 pesos will definitely go a loooong way.

Now that's my 5 5 5!  5 for 50 days.  5 for November 5.  And 5 for 5 pesos that when saved up would become bigger and make every child smile! :)

You may look up the following blog entries for our little community's story:

*Prices for every dozen of balloons are still P180 for assorted colors and P190 for choice of color.

All Souls' Day

All Souls' Day had never been the same since I grew older.  When we were kids, it was the most looked-forward-to-occasion of the year since we loved going to the cemetery so much!  We got to play with our other cousins, see distant relatives, eat a lot of food, play cards and bingo, do hide and seek, and santelmo with candles and fire.  But today, it's a sort of to-do to go to the cemetery already.  Because for me, remembering the loved ones doesn't have to be being there where they are resting in peace.  Anywhere we are, we can remember them for they are already in our hearts.  So for today, I got tired of cemetery hopping.  From PIC to Pryce to Mt. Malindang.  Wheew!

But as Filipinos, a tradition stays a tradition.  Until there are All Saints' and All Souls' Day, we are going to the cemetery no matter what.  Let's not just be redirected from the essence of it.

All Saints' Night

All Saints' Day also marks the death anniversary of our G-ma, Mrs. Luz Bala-Olandesca.  She chose to breath her last on the 1st of November 29 years ago so she will be remembered by all.  So to all our relatives, friends, and neighbors, thank you so much for gracing the occasion with your presence! :)
Everybody, young, and old enjoyed the night so much!  This is what our G-ma always loved and wanted.  Gather people with food, food, and food as well as dance, dance, and dance!  And one thing I'll always remember about this gathering is the dance choreographed by the kids impromptu to the beat of All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor.

So in memory of our G-ma, another party had been enjoyed by everybody!  'Till next year, guys, gals, and kiddos!

Credits to Brent Josh Bala for the photos! :)
