Whimsical Wednesday: From the Atmosphere to Forever

Whimsical Wednesday shows my fancy in a myriad of beautiful things.

I'm sorry for interrupting this blog's current line-up of Thailand posts.  There's just something I want to share with you, my ever dearest and very patient blog readers.  So, come bear with me.  Hehe.....

Last week, I discussed the Layers of the Atmosphere to my NatSci 1 class and integrated to the topic the ladder of success.  It emphasizes the concept of taking one step at a time, of stages, phases, level by level, layers!  So I assigned them a homework that will illustrate who will they become and what will they be doing in their lives 5 years from now, 10 years from now, and 15 years from now.  And I was pretty amazed by their visions!

Majority of them have the same vision of graduating college 5 years from now, establishing a career 10 years from now, and having a family of their own 15 years from now.  Then I laughed!  Why is it that everybody thought of marriage as the ultimate goal?  Why is marriage regarded as a "happy ending?"  I even asked my students these questions and I received different reactions.  Some were surprised, some raised their eyebrows, and some looked at their seatmate with a big question mark on their faces.  In short, my students got confused with my questions and answered, "Ma'am, where else are we going?", "Ma'am, that's reality", "Ma'am, we will be 30 something 15 years from now so we should be married by then", "Ma'am, its a fact", and so on......  Like they were saying, "Hello, Ma'am?  Come on!"

So I got to think to myself.  Was I asked 15 years ago of what I want to happen in my life?  Of course, I was asked!  That's a very common question but I can't recall if I was really asked.  But if I was really asked, were my answers the same as my students'?  I can't recall any answer at all.  All I know is, what was always on mind was to be out of Ozamiz and become filthy rich!  Have I attained these goals?  The answer is a big NO!  So I also got to evaluate what I did 15 years ago that led me to my state of life now.

In contrast to what I tasked my students to do, I tasked myself to list down what I was doing to my life for the past 15 years.  I'm doing it backwards and I came up with this:

It was year 2001, a year after the start of the new millennium.  I was 18 years old, the age of my students these days.  In this stage of my life, I was very idealistic.  I was so guarded not to be courted so I could not have a boyfriend so I could not get myself pregnant so I could finish college with flying colors.  The flying colors?  They flew away as I had 1 failed subject and many 3.0's because of the nature of my school.  So the "flying colors" goal was already marked X right on my third year in college!  And to tell you of my next goals?  Be a licensed chemical engineer, work in a big manufacturing company, and earn big bucks!

It was year 2006, a year after my graduation in college.  I was 23 years old, fresh from the board exam.  Surely, I got my first job as a process engineer in a not big company.  Another goal marked X.  But I didn't like my job so I resigned and applied for another job as a research and development laboratory assistant in a not big company too but better than the first.  In here, I tried really hard to love the chemical engineering world but without success.  I always felt the need to explore and to be far and away from my chosen field.  So after almost a year, I resigned again because I wanted to do other things undefined.

It was year 2011, two years after having a try at the academic world.  I was 28 years old, fresh from heartbreak.  I resigned from a teaching job and tried to escape teaching.  I never dreamed of becoming a teacher, ever anyway!  So I went out there again to have another try only to find out that my heart belongs to Ozamiz.  Then that's the time when I chose Ozamiz so the "going out of Ozamiz" goal was marked X again.  Additionally, I unexpectedly missed teaching so I got back and made a promise to myself not to regret all decisions I made no matter what!

Now

It is year 2016, a year after the same heartbreak.  I am now 33 years old, older and wiser.  Good news!  I now accepted my destiny of becoming a teacher!  I had considered this as my ministry.  And thank God I'm still choosing Ozamiz, thank God I am living my life one step at a time!  I am not dwelling in the past anymore and I am not frantic about the future.  By God's grace, I am at peace and I've learned to become still.  No matter how many goals that had been X'ed, surprisingly I am okay.  I may not be in Manila, Cebu, or any other big cities to have permanent residency but there's no other home than Ozamiz.  I may not be working in a big company but I'm connected with a prestigious university.  I may not earn big bucks through teaching but I have my business to supply my "wants".  I'm surprisingly fine with everything I have now!  I am content, I'm satisfied!  So, where am I in the stage of life today?

Now let's go back to the question.  Marriage!  Everybody says I should be married.  In fact, my colleagues had put me in a hot seat just to evaluate me and see the root cause of me still being single at this old age.  Honestly, as I see more of my students' drawings, I said to myself that there must be something wrong with me!  Why is marriage not part of me?  However, there were also 3 unique students who illustrated that very stage of my life at the moment.

Because for the time being, I'm busy.  Though I stilled myself, I am still busy.  Busy with my job, my master's degree, and my business.  I just decluttered a bit and I'm guilty for that.  Hehe.....  Because I'm still learning to slowly take off things from my system and to only keep those that matter the most.  Moreover, I am also living my dream!  My unconscious dream of being a strong independent woman.  The kind of woman who owns her time, does things her own way, spends her own money for herself only, and one who can rule the world!  Must be very selfish of me, huh?  Can you say that there is a need for me to grow up?  Can't I still not include marriage after all the selfishness I indulged myself to?  Can't I have the following vision?

When I'm done with my career goals, business goals, and travel goals, can I also dream of a partnership, a together, and a forever?  Can I include marriage in the picture?  As I was always asking, complaining, and ranting, I realize by this time of writing this blog post that the problem is me.  Me, myself, and I because I am selfish.  I have a fear of getting married!   And now that I have evaluated my problem, how will I overcome this fear?  I guess I will just leave this as a hanging question for I've already written a lengthy post.  So pardon me.  Hehe.....

However, I just want to give this simple message to my students.  A message of lifting up all plans to the Lord because many are the plans in a man's heart but it is the Lord's plan that prevails (Proverbs 19:21).  No matter how planned your schedule will be, no matter how organized your timeline is, but if it is not the will of God, everything will be in vain.  For it is written, "Meaningless! Meaningless!  Everything is meaningless, a chasing after the wind." (Ecclesiastes 1)

And as for me, it doesn't matter if I'm gonna finish my master's thesis or not.  It doesn't matter if we have plenty of orders at the store or not.  And it doesn't matter if I'm gonna go out of the country again or not.  What matters is, I have my God and my God is more than enough for me!  And as I still wait on Him, getting married is still in His hands!

Welcoming the Heart Month with a Bang!

Oh, heart month!  Here you are again!  Here you are to put infliction to my heart again!  You've never been good to me!  Anyhow, I still have to welcome you as my colleague, Engr. Mark said in his FB status:

"FEBRUARY - Latid word 'februum' which means PURIFICATION
                      - from the ancient Roman purification ritual 'Februa'".

So you are not that bad at all.  That's why for this first day of your rule, I decided to "purify" myself.  Purify myself from the past, purify myself from the memories, purify myself from the pain and hurt.  Purify myself from him!  Yes, I still cried when I woke up this dawn at 5 AM.  Yes, I'm still faking my smiles.  Yes, I'm still broken and shattered.  But I have to carry on.  I have to move forward as what he'd done.  I have to gather myself up because the game is so so over!

I'm just glad that for today, I had some fun!  It's the first day of CAS Week as La Salle University's College of Arts and Sciences celebrates its 61st founding anniversary.  With that, we jumpstarted the festivities with a team building this afternoon.  We played a lot of fun games for the students and faculty to enjoy!

The Chinese Garter
The Hoola Hoop
The Face Powder
The Candy Crush
The Ball Shooting
The Phrase Guessing
The Step-Step
The Yell
Aside from the games, we also had water and paint war as the fad nowadays.  Everybody got painted and wet which added to the hype of the afternoon!

The Ruined Happy Shirt
Now I thank you, February 1 for the fun I had today!  Though still sad, I welcome you Heart Month!  I may still be solo but at least I have some company as I'm trying to heal my heart.

Stay tuned tomorrow for CAS Week's official opening program! :)

A for Ánimo!

Time flies soooo fast and I'm turning 1 at La Salle!  Wow!  I still can't believe I dared to teach in this prestigious university!  I still can't believe I chose teaching over engineering!  I still can't believe I survived teaching from high school to college students!  It is just so awesome that I am sticking into this profession since 2009!

Looking back, I was in a dilemma before ditching my "real" profession.  It was so hard for me to decide because I know what I was loosing.  Being a licensed chemical engineer entitled me to earn real good fortune if I'm giving my service to chemical industrial plants.  But considering to be a teacher, teachers don't earn that much.  Sad to say, it is reality that most teachers survive through loans.  It is often a joke that all loans were already being applied and availed except for por-loan (hearse).  But anyway, I chose teaching.  With eyes closed and hearts closed, I chose it for the purpose of just being here in Ozamis, my comfort zone.

Eventually, I learned to love teaching the hardest way.  As a non-educator, I was so lost at what I had entered into!  I was such a misfit!  Rowdy kids, class observations, paper works, and the likes - everything were really stress boosters!  However, I got the hang of it and learned to love every single detail of teaching minus the loans.  Hehe.....

Just yesterday and the other day, I attended four modules of Lasallian Formation.  It is the study of the life of St. John Baptist de La Salle, the history of the foundation of La Salle schools, and the value of instilling St. John Baptist's mission into the hearts of all Lasallians who had chosen to become part of the Lasallian family.

As already a Lasallian (I'm an alumna of ICC-La Salle), I knew La Salle's mission is to give education to the poor.  Then I asked my Religious Education (Rel.Ed.) teacher from a long time ago, "Poor?  Then why is it that our tuition fee is very high?".  At an early age of 12 I had asked that question for being so kuripot even before.  Then he replied, "Poor doesn't literally mean poor financially.  It can be poor in knowledge, poor in love, poor in spirit, or poor in any other aspect of a person's being."  So I understood.  We may sound like a luxurious school but if we dig deeper, we can understand what La Salle is all about.

St. John Baptist de La Salle's Portrait at the Arts Center
La Salle aims to provide quality human and Christian education especially to the poor.  That's why we have Br. Martin Simpson Laboratory School (BMSLS) and Night High School which are intended for those who are less fortunate.  BMSLS offers Grades 1 to 10 for kids who are so willing to come to school but cannot afford to.  On the other hand, Night High School offers Grades 7 to 10 for teenagers who are working by day and still want to pursue their studies.  A School for the Deaf is also open for all our deaf/mute brothers and sisters.  So aside from our regular colleges and integrated school which also offers scholarships, we have these three other schools that cater the educational needs of our less privileged brothers and sisters.

Additionally, La Salle has these core values of FSC.  That's Faith, Service, and Communion.  (Literally, FSC stands for Fratres Scholarum Christianarum, "The Brothers of the Christian Schools" in English)  First is the spirit of faith.  Everything that La Salle does is rooted in God.  La Salle follows the example of Christ and lives according to the gospel.  Second is the zeal in service.  Being God's servant entails you to die to yourself and to be alive in Christ.  It is also into being a servant to others.  Third is mission as communion.  Truly, no man is an island.  We cannot work by ourselves only.  Three heads are better than one.  So we need one another in order to attain a goal.  We need to be associated with one another and have good fellowship to further the mission God has given.  And with this, Lasallians must be ONE!

Finally, we have one mission, one vision, one God!  We are ONE La Salle!  Though we have individual differences, we are one in spirit in teaching minds, touching hearts, and transforming lives.  This is what being a Lasallian is.  This is not about religion, not about prestige, and not about being the best.  But this is about making a difference in the society in the name of only one God.

So with this, we pledged to further St. John Baptist de La Salle's cause.  Now, it is not me and students or me and co-teachers or me and superiors anymore but it is WE.  We are one!  Ánimo!  Long live the Lasallian spirit!

Halad: A Concert for a Cause for Typhoon Yolanda Survivors

(c) La Salle University - Ozamiz Facebook Community Page
Since super typhoon Haiyan left its massive devastation last month in Visayas, fund-raising events took place left and right not just in the Philippines but all over the whole world!  There were collection of donations, auctions, a-thon events, tournaments, gala dinners, and concerts.  And just last Friday, La Salle University - Ozamiz held its concert for a cause entitled Halad.

Halad is a Visayan word for offering.  An offering is something freely and willingly given so all the participants in this show gave their time, effort, and talent heartily.  We were not dictated, we were not forced, we were not requested, but we favorably volunteered.  We generously and enthusiastically showcased our little sing and dance talents for the benefit of those who are in need.

Now I'll just bombard you with some photos of the presentations I took part with:

And what's great about this fund-raising event is the bonding between Lasallians!  I found beautiful new friendship with my colleagues and this is my reward for extending a helping hand once again for the typhoon Yolanda survivors.

Treating Ourselves After the Shows
Indeed, helping others in our own little ways can go a very long way.  And to all Yolanda survivors, this is for you.  We are still here who care because WE ARE ONE!

Whimsical Wednesday: My High School Alma Mater

Whimsical Wednesday shows my fancy in a myriad of beautiful things.

After more than a decade, I got back to my high school alma mater - the Immaculate Conception College-La Salle! Yeah, ICC-La Salle (now La Salle University) is just a 5-minute walk away from our house.  But I never really had the time and opportunity to visit my past campus after graduation.  I was so glad that last Friday, Marvel and Reloufe invited me to go with them to submit Marvel's application.  So I instantly grabbed the chance to stroll down again at my high school home.

It was so great walking past by old memory lane - where I first soared academically, where I first showed my hidden talents, where I first found my BFFs, and where I first had my puppy love.  Surely, high school life have nothing to compare it with.  It is the best chapter in any one's life, the most fun experience in adolescent period, and the greatest thing that could ever happen to everybody! :)
